Don Draper has assumed this name and changed his identity while he was in the Korean War. His commander died in battle and Draper assumed his identity to escape his past.
The show has received some criticisms for the infidelity that many men in the show participate in. It also has dealt with criticism because the way women and other races are depicted in this series. Mad Men takes a hard look at the times and tries to show others what it may have been like during this time frame. Many people have fond memories of the past and this may be the reason that so many of the critics had a hard time with this fact as the good and the bad of the times are portrayed in Mad Men.
Mad Men has won four Golden Globes and thirteen Emmys three years in a row. These are outstanding rewards for this type of show considering it was only broadcast on one channel.
